2015 NAR Home Staging Profile

The National Association of Realtors released its 2015 Profile of Home Staging recently.  2300 realtors participated from throughout the United States. The results have caused some home stagers to be thrilled and others to scratch their heads.  Here are the results we thought were the most interesting.  The full report can found here.

Staging helps sell for higher priceMost people have an easier time imagining how a property would work for them when they can see how it works for other families. Staging, when done right, illustrates the optimal lifestyle for a house. Buyers are more willing to walk through a home that has been staged, according to 46% of respondents.

While this statistic – 57% of real estate agents believe that buyers will offer more  – between 1 and 10% – on a staged home compared to a similar home.  On a $600,000 home, if a seller were to spend $3 or $4, 000 on a staging, they could potentially see an additional $60,000 coming back in. What we say around here in Naperville, IL, is that home staging can typically bring in an additional $20- 40,000 when all is said and done.

This home staging profile statistic about buyers overlooking a property fault does not mean that home staging covers up property faults. It simply means that the buyer has become more committed to the home that the fault is less of a deterrent to purchase. So often, particularly with first time home buyers, a little bit of maintenance work feels overwhelming and dangerous.  But if they already know how terrific the home can look at the other end, the survey suggests, they are more inclined to try with a staged home.

If 12% of agents believe that staging has no impact on the dollar value of the home, then 88% clearly do.  This is an exciting statistic; and a nice reinforcement of what the staging industry has been sharing for a long time:

Staged home sell faster and for more money than non-staged homes.
