Coffee Table Decor Ideas to Refresh Your Space
A coffee table is a central element in both the living room and family room design. This is where you have to opportunity to add interest, texture and set a mood. A coffee table allows a home stager to define exactly who the target buyer is for the home by utilizing personable accessories that make them feel welcome.
Here at Chicagoland Home Staging, our team follows five simple rules for staging a coffee table, and these rules will work for anyone looking to spruce up their space.
Rule #1 – Start with a Tray
A tray can help ground the accessories you want to use on the coffee table, and allows you to cluster a mix of items in a tidy way. Contrast shapes by placing a rectangular tray on a round coffee table. Here, the tray on this ottoman coffee table can provide a hard surface for cocktails, or can be a quick way to clean up the items so you can use the ottoman as a foot rest. Dual purpose for the win!
Rule #2 – Vary Height Accessories
Be sure to never exceed the overall height of the sofa, but add a tall item, or pair of tall candlesticks, and then vary the height of the other pieces. It makes for an inviting focal point, and draws you into a room to have a look. In this picture above, we chose to feature a vase with greenery, a stack of books with a metal sphere on top and a wooden game. Notice how each item was featured at a different height to create interest.
Rule #3 – Add Greenery or Something Organic
When we are considering how to decorate a coffee table in a vacant home, our team will avoid using any real plant material. But we do use silk plants, driftwood and even faux organic spheres to highlight a touch of Mother Nature, which provides that warm, welcoming feeling.
Rule #4 – Use Books
There’s nothing else that speaks to a target buyer quite like books. If the house has a beautiful yard, you want a great gardening book. If there’s land for horses, a book of horses underscores the point; the same with boating and/or fishing if there’s a river or lake nearby. And if the home is on the flight path to a major airport, then books about travel suggest this is the perfect home for anyone where proximity to transportation is an important selling feature.
Less is more though, notice how we only used two books on this coffee table pictured above to alleviate a cluttered space.
Rule #5 – Strive For Balance
The human mind finds symmetry in a room soothing, which is why you see so many home stagers using it. The easiest way to balance a room is to have matching lamps on the side tables and a few simple, larger items on the coffee table. In this living room pictured above, our team brought in two matching coffee tables to balance out the scale of the room.
