Creating a Focal Point in the Dining Room

The holidays are here and if you’re hosting the family for Thanksgiving, Hanukah or Christmas the dining room will be a major place to entertain guests. While the main focal point in this room is the dining table, what’s even more important is what’s displayed on top of the table’s surface.

The centerpiece can be inspired by the season, a holiday, a place, or even color and pattern. No matter what you choose, you’ll need to gather materials to use. Some of the easiest things to incorporate in a centerpiece are:

  • Basics: Dishes, Silverware, Glasses, Napkins, Runner/Tablecloth
  • Décor: Candlesticks, Candles, Glassware, Serveware
  • Flowers/Branches: Can be Faux or Natural!

Start with a clean and uncluttered surface. Then choose a tablecloth, runner, or whatever will lay the base of your centerpiece. Then compile your centerpiece begins with candlesticks and vases. Vary the height of decor throughout the centerpiece, but there are a couple of tips to remember when setting the scene.

Centerpiece Creation

  • Think about the conversation had around the table. Don’t create displays too tall that guests can’t see across from each other.
  • Be mindful of the chandelier height too! Keep décor at the center of the table on the lower end below the chandelier.
  • Vary texture throughout the centerpiece consider using natural elements to accomplish this.
  • It’s important to follow the rule of threes: the design principle that arrangements of threes are the most visually appealing.

After placing the larger items, step back to see if the centerpiece is missing anything. Remember, sometimes less is more, so don’t overdo the centerpiece. Need more help decorating your space? Contact us today and happy holidays!
