Our Go To Neutral Paint Colors

Neutral paint colors can instantly add personality, a soft hue and dimension to any room without overpowering the space. Here at Chicagoland Home Staging, we suggest neutral colors when staging a home because creams, beiges, and grays appeal to more home buyers as they tour the property. Neutral colors are timeless, sophisticated hues that make them the go-to choice for our team when a client is preparing their property for sale.

Our job is to maximize the square footage in the house, neutral colors help us highlight each room’s best features without distracting a buyer. Here are a few of our go-to neutral paint colors to try in your home:

Benjamin Moore Paint Colors

Benjamin Moore has an off-white collection (OC) that showcases a spectrum of hues within the neutral family. Pale Oak is a very versatile color that can dramatically change depending on the lighting. In natural light, the color looks more beige, while in darker rooms this color shows off its hint of gray. You will find this color is ideal in any situation.

These next two colors are shown above, Balboa Mist and Collingwood are in the same off-white collection, just one shade away on the deck, but they can look very different in a room. Balboa Mist is a slightly lighter warm gray, than Collingwood and the feminine undertones are more noticeable. Collingwood, on the other hand, is a light warm gray with a very faint purple undertone. Both look gorgeous in any room.

Looking for a neutral with a bit more depth? Try Nimbus Gray, Benjamin Moore describes this color as: “dense as the cloud for which it’s named, this cool mid-tone blue-gray evokes memories of an early winter walk on a deserted wind-swept beach.” This hue can set the mood in a master bedroom or paint kitchen/bath cabinets for a modern look.

In some lights, Edgecomb Gray leans slightly more to the beige side, while in others it seems grayer. This warm, organic hue has an almost creamy feeling that adds a welcoming feeling, particularly in rooms with northern exposure or shadowed corners.

Sherwin Williams Paint Colors

Our only Sherwin Williams color to top the list mimics the subtly of the Benjamin Moore color choices noted above. Modern Gray is a greige hue that can certainly coat the walls of your entire home. This color’s undertones play well with other colors including blue, green, orange and even fuschia. Paring this gray with lighter cream colors can also create a sophisticated look.

Neutrals can be warm or cool, so it’s important to look at the darkest shade on the paint swatch.  That’s where the color is the most obvious and it will tell you what undertones are going to show up, even in the lightest shades. Warm whites have undertones of red and yellow, resulting in a soft glow and welcoming mood. Cool whites have undertones of blue, green and gray, creating a space that looks crisp, clean and luminous.

White paint colors are especially prone to taking on different tonalities from morning to evening, under both natural and artificial lighting conditions we recommend purchasing a sample of the whites you like and test each one out before you buy.
