Trending Now: 5 Modern Black Room and Decor Ideas

The color black continues to be a major home decor trend this year. This hue reflects a strong and dramatic color that can help ground certain elements in contemporary and modern spaces.

In the past, there was a tried-and-true home staging rule: make sure to use light neutral colors to maximize the space. In this custom home though we recently staged on East 11th Ave. in Naperville— well, rules were meant to be broken. It’s all about how you use the color.

The builder strategically used black to enhance colors and shapes around the 4,000-square foot home. Black can be used in any room, in any style. From a major focal point to a simple throw pillow, black is a sophisticated, seductive neutral that makes a dramatic statement when selling a home.

Black Windows Create a Framework

Black windows can create a cool industrial modern vibe to both your exterior and interior. Like white, black windows can be a fresh update that can collaborate with most styles, materials, and colors. These windows also provide a jumping-off point to use the color black throughout the room to create one cohesive look.

Anchor a Room with Black Staples

Notice the windows and fireplace provide a great foundation but you need furnishings and accessories to give this room more life. We chose to stage the family room with a few key black pieces: the accent chair, nesting tables and sofa table. We also chose tables with black legs, while using a black patterned throw and toss-pillows to create one cohesive look in this room.

Here’s a pro-tip for you: be sure to use a mixture of different-scale patterns along with solid black and solid white materials to create visual interest and depth.

High Contrast Focal Points

The days of all-white kitchens and baths are behind us as we see more custom home builders using color combinations. Inside this kitchen pictured above notice the island cabinetry, large pendant lighting, and oven hood are all black. This provides a high contrast compared to the white materials in the room. The perfect, classic pairing.

The builder also mimicked this technique in the master bathroom when they chose black vanity cabinetry.

Black Wall of Tiles

For a bold statement try using black tiles as an accent wall. The large trendy herringbone subway tile makes you never want to leave this beautiful shower. Matte, shiny, big or small, black tiles can add a gorgeous statement piece that will get buyers talking in your home.

Softer Tones to Mix n’ Match

If black is too powerful for a room, try using a charcoal gray tone to soften the bold color. We were able to mix n’ match dark gray with beige to compliment all the builder materials used in the room pictured above to create a calm, trendy retreat.
